2011 WSBK Miller Sunday Roundup: In A Downpour, Racing Motorcycles Looks Like The Hard Work It Is

A drop or two of rain always adds an extra dimension to motorcycle racing, and Sunday at Miller saw more than a drop or two of rain. That rain had a pretty big impact on the order, with riders such as BMW's Leon Haslam, who had struggled in the dry, suddenly finding themselves near the very top in the morning downpour, then dropping back as the conditions improved a little.

In fact, the rain may have inadvertently highlighted BMW's problem: In the dry, Corser was going strongly while Haslam struggled. In the wet, Haslam positively flew while Corser dropped down the order. As the conditions improved, the fates of the two men reversed, Haslam knocked out of Superpole 2 - crashing while trying to push - while Corser secured a spot on the second row of the grid. The settings of one appear not to suit the settings of the other, and that may go some way towards explaining why the development of the S1000RR has been erratic. The electronics, especially, have been the BMW's bugbear, with the complex system that BMW has developed in-house causing the riders, team and engineers plenty of headaches.

Checa wins his fourth Superpole in Salt Lake City

Checa wins his fourth Superpole in Salt Lake City

Checa wins his fourth Superpole in Salt Lake City

The rain and cold seemed to have turned the table and changed the values ??that had emerged from the first day of practice yesterday and spoke of a clearly superior to all Checa. In qualifying this morning it was only the fourth and Carlos was particularly by almost three seconds off Camier, who commanded the standings. Even in practice prior to the rider Superpole Althea maintained a detachment from the English in April by nearly three seconds and even slipped in tenth position. With this background, this could be the prerogative of Superpole seemed Camier Checa with a clear difficulty in the wet and slippery. But just a few minutes Superpole to subvert the odds once again.

Camier fell into ruin and destroy his Aprilia. He could get back on track with the second bike for the first twelve and then enter the access to phase two for a split second. Biaggi won the first stage before Guintoli, Laverty and Melandri, with Checa only eighth. Remained conspicuously excluded both the Castrol Honda team riders, Rea and Xaus (and say that the Dutch team had carried out two days of testing at this track to prepare for the best weekend of racing), and two Suzuki riders: the battered Fabrizio, that in addition to the influence of poor adherence problems also accused of his Suzuki and Yoshimura rider, wild card Waters.

Meanwhile the rain had stopped falling and the track was drying. The long shadow of Checa and then returned to lengthen the runway of Miller Motorsports and in fact behind a fast Smrz who won the second session, we just Checa, trailing by half a second from the Liberty team rider. Behind the two Ducati, goes in Laverty, Biaggi, Guintoli, Corser, a fantastic Badovini and Melandri. Excluding a surprise Leon Haslam, author of a right that the de facto excluded from the struggle for stage three, Haga, Sykes and Camier was clearly not at ease with his number two bike.

This brings us to the last phase of this fifth Superpole seasonal, with the track showed that dry patches as well as strips of water going through it completely. Difficult conditions, where it takes skill, courage and experience. Smrz when it seemed that he could celebrate his first pole seasonal, with a flash Checa crossed the line beyond the pilot of the Czech Republic for only 75 milliseconds. The paw of the lion. Complete the first row the two Yamaha riders Marco Melandri and Laverty, consistently fast in all conditions and that tomorrow along with Biaggi seem the only ones capable of countering the dominance of Spanish Ducati. A Guintoli finally healed opens the second row consists of Corser, Biaggi and Badovini. The Corsair was giving the assault on the first position when he made a right and then almost fell on the lawn situation. Badovini confirms a beautiful reality of Superbike, confirming the good things he had seen in the Superstock 1000 and before that with the Kawasaki team Pedercini.

And tomorrow? Races that await us? The predictions are for a slow improvement in the weather and so it is said that the competitions will be played on a wet track. If the track is dry and if the Ducati’s Carlos will not make the tantrums, the pilot of the Althea team starts big favorite, the Yamaha and Aprilia leaving the task to act as trackers. But if it should rain the races will be open to any outcome, with special attention to Guintoli and Laverty, who proved to be comfortable under water. Has truly demonstrated Camier, but English is still too inconsistent and prone to error. Melandri and Biaggi were always fast, but in case of dry conditions do not seem to keep pace with the wild Checa.

Will still be two games although not miss to see the race to the bottom two have to do the small hours, as the street will be given at 23.30 Italian time.

Rossi Testing Ducati GP12 At Mugello, Alongside New Ducati Superbike

The return of the 1000cc MotoGP bikes in 2012 is keenly awaited, and testing for the 2012 season is now well underway. Ducati has had two days of testing at Jerez back in April, while Casey Stoner put in two days on the Honda at Jerez earlier this month.

As they did for the switch to 800cc back in 2007, Ducati is getting a lot of work done early, as Valentino Rossi is back on track at Mugello today (Thursday), testing the GP12 again, according to reports at GPOne.com. Rossi's test day will be the third of the eight days testing allowed with contracted (i.e. current MotoGP) riders on the 2012 machine, and as GPOne.com suggests, is a clue that the emphasis for Ducati is very much on being competitive from the start of the 2012 season.

2012 MotoGP Entries: 11 Teams, 16 Riders, But Names Only At Catalunya

There are many reasons to look forward to the 2012 MotoGP season, not least because of the influx of new entries expected because of the new rules. And we are drawing tantalizingly close to finding out the names of the teams involved, but at the moment, their names are still a carefully guarded secret. Hence the general sense of frustration when the FIM today issued a press release that is pregnant with possibility, yet almost entirely devoid of content: After announcing at Estoril that 13 teams and 21 riders had entered, at Le Mans, Dorna and IRTA reviewed the list of entries and whittled it down to 11 teams and 16 riders, and the FIM issued the press release shown below: No names, no hints, no information.

So what do we know about the 2012 entries? One thing that we do know is that Norton have submitted an entry for two slots on the grid. However, the iconic British brand will not be accepted as a CRT team, instead, Norton will have to compete on the same footing as Suzuki, with just 21 liters of fuel and 9 engines - with manufacturers who have not won a MotoGP race in recent years being given an extra engine allocation. Beyond Norton, there are very few factories believed to be interested. There remain whispers of KTM reviving its old V4 project, but a direct entry is thought to be unlikely.
